What is SALTY?

SALTY came about because of the success of the SALT (Syracuse Area Live Theatre) Awards founded by Syracuse New Times publisher Arthur Zimmer. In its first two years, SALT received so many requests for a youth awards category that an entirely separate awards event for performers 18 years old and younger needed to be created.

The SALTY Awards were established in 2005 to honor the achievements of youth actors and theatre arts educators. SALTY is an arts organization independent of SALT and was recently incorporated as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization in New York State.

Onondaga County high school productions, theatre educators, performers ages 18 and below, and companies that produce youth theatre and/or feature child/teen actors are eligible for SALTY Awards. Every high school is invited to register for SALTY consideration, and in deference to each district's own decision, no schools will be considered that do not wish to participate.

How can my high school or theatre company participate?

Any high school and/or theatre company in Onondaga County may register by emailing SALTYAcademy@aol.com for registration forms. A SHOW REGISTRATION FORM must be submitted for each separate production (e.g. fall play, spring musical, etc.); this information is used to compile the ballots sent to SALTY Academy members at the end of the season, which runs from May 2006-April 2007. In 2005-2006, ten Onondaga County high schools participated in SALTY

If you're a high school student involved in a school show, please encourage your teacher/director to submit your school's productions for consideration for the 2006-2007 SALTY Awards.
Email SALTYAcademy@aol.com to find out more.

Who decides what shows are nominated?

In SALTY's first year (2005-06), nominations were determined by an Academy made up of theatre educators, high school students, and interested adults involved in theatre. Academy members can choose to view the shows in person or (if they are unable to attend) watch 'screeners' of each registered show. Although registration is free to schools and theatre companies that participate, SALTY asks that FIVE DVD COPIES of each registered show be provided for the exclusive use of Academy members for voting purposes only. The top vote-getters are the shows nominated in each category, with the winner announced at the annual SALTY Awards event at the New Times Theatre.

Can I join the SALTY Academy?

Perhaps, depending on whether or not you're a student or adult. The 2006-2007 SALTY Academy is taking shape, with several current Academy members continuing on, and potential members welcome to apply. Adults may apply by emailing SALTYAcademy@aol.com for information. Students should see their high school theatre educator if interested. PLEASE NOTE: ACADEMY MEMBERS CANNOT VOTE FOR SHOWS THEY ARE AFFILIATED WITH. High school students cannot vote for their school shows (whether or not they are in the cast) and likewise cannot vote for local theatre productions they have participated in. Any votes cast that violate this rule are null and void and will not be counted in the final tabulation.
